I saw this online and had to post.

Someone basically did the Star Wars movies done as the opening to Magnum, P.I. They actually went through the movie and found exact scenes that fit each scene in the Magnum opening. The below video does a scene by scene comparison.

Another example of someone with too much time on their hands...

<lj-embed id="1" />

Shameless Begging - Cool Stuff to buy...

I've mentioned in previous posts that I will be particiating in the 48 Hour Film Projects. One of the things we are working on is covering the costs of the production.

One thing you can do to lend your support is to purchase one of the items at our CafePress.com store. You can buy a number of items bearing the official "Suffusion of Yellow Productions" logo. These items include T-shirts, Buttons, Magnets, Caps, Bags, and the official "Suffusion of Yellow Productions" thong ("Made in the USA").

The link for these items is http://www.cafepress.com/teamyellow.

We're not making a lot of money from these items, but we wanted to give people the chance to get something they could wear or use to show off their support and to bring in a little extra cash. Please share this link with others and especially encourage people who might come to see our screening at the AFI Silver Theater to buy a shirt or hat or even a button to wear to the theater that night.

You might want to skip wearing the thong to the screening, although it would certainly draw attention for our film.

Thanks in Advance!!!

Apologies to those who read this in divalion's journal...

As I stated in an earlier post, I am working on the 48 hour film project this year. I am going to be producing. However, in order to get this project going, we are going to need money. This is where the shameless begging comes into play.

The full details are at http://divalion.livejournal.com/290274.html. This year I am going to be Producing (I feel more like Matthew Broderick than Nathan Lane, and certainly not Zero Mostel).

It will a lot more responsiblity than last year, but I think it will be a lot of fun.

More info can be found at http://divalion.livejournal.com/287630.html, but the scoop right now is that we are canvasing for possible resources, whether it be great location, unusual skills, film/lighting equipment, or great props and costumes. If you have anything of this sort, please let us know so we can work up a contact/resource list.

The budget is being finalized, so as divalion says, the shameless begging will come later. :-)

Also, if you are interested in getting involved in the filmmaking process, let us know.
Alas, I have nothing audio to report.

I finished reading the book "Hannibal Rising" by Thomas Harris. This book is a prequel to Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, and Hannibal. The idea was to show how Hannibal Lechter became the person he is. However, it pretty much failed on all levels.

The first problem is that if you were reading this book, you would undoubtedly have read the previous one (Hannibal), when you would have discovered that his younger sister Micha was eaten by starving soldiers at the end of WWII. And yet, this book is written as if it is a horrible surprise to the reader. This gave me a "Get on with it" attitude while reading it. The rest of the book was pretty much about his stay with his uncle and aunt in Paris and his eventual vengeance upon the soldiers who killed his sister. His foray into cannibalism was very briefly touched upon, but it seemed almost an afterthought.

I guess the attempt was to make Lechter more sympathetic. I thought it pretty much made him boring.

For movies, I watched the 79th Academy Awards on Sunday and wanted to give my thoughts. Unfortunately, I watched very few of the movies nominated this year, so I can't give in-depth thoughts on who won and why (at least in relation to their specific roles).

1) I wasn't very impressed with Ellen DeGeneres as a host. She seemed too sedate and a lot of her humor fell flat. However, I enjoyed the surreal moment where she asked Steven Spielberg to take the photo of her with Clint Eastwood.

2) They waited too long before the first major award, Best Supporting Actor. I'm sure lot of people tuned out way before that. I was surprised that Eddie Murphy didn't win, but I was not disappointed that Alan Arkin won. I've been a fan of his for quite some time. "The In-Laws" was one of my favorite comedies, mostly due to Arkin's deadpan. On the other end of the spectrum, his role as Harry Rote in "Wait Until Dark" was one of the creepiest movie villians ever.

3) The shadow puppets of the various movies were fun, especially since they were short. It was much better than the interpretive dance of the various soundtracks like Savion Glover did one year.

4) Speaking of Savion Glover, I thought Cars should have won over Happy Feet. The animation was better and the story was better as well. For people who don't know the connection, Savion Glover was the dancer that the penguin was modeled after. The irony is that Savion Glover can't sing either (we often make fun of his rendition of "Rhyme Out" on sesame Street - he should stick to dancing.

5) The orchestra of people making sound effects was interesting, but a bit long.

6) Funniest moment of the night - Al Gore's special announcement being interupted by the "your time's up" music of the orchestra.

7) Did we need Celine Dion to sing a mediocre new song by Ennio Moricone? I thought the tribute was nice, though.

8) Foreign film tribute was a little disjointed, but OK.

9) Jennifer Hudson for Best supporting actress. No surprise there.

10) Helen Mirren for Best Actress. Again no surprise. I've been following her career since "The Long Good Friday", "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover", "The Madness of King George" and the "Prime Suspect" series. Glad to see her finally get recognition - Big Time.
11) Forest Whitaker for Best Actor - I've enjoyed him since "Bird". Glad to see him win. It was a tough call, as there were supposedly lots of good performances.
12) Martin Scorsese for the win! It's about time. Glad to see it being presented by his friends Coppola, Spielberg, and Lucas.
13) The Departed for best film. I wasn't sure which one was going to win...
Hopefully I'll get a chance to see all these movies that everyone was making a fuss about... :-)

Heroes was excellent last night. It gave Mr. Bennett so much more depth and the ending was heartbreaking. The writing is still going strong and it keeps me wanting more (always a good sign).

I suspected that George Takei was more involved than his first appearance let on. hopefully, this means he will show up more. I wonder if Hiro is adopted as well...

Eric Roberts has not aged well. He looks terrible.
Here are the answers to my Friends quiz. If you would like to take it first, it is at

http://www.truefriendtest.com/friendtest/61990

If you would like to see the answers, then

Question #1 - My middle name is Allan (the slightly less common spelling). The only Alun I know of is Alun Armstrong, who played Wackford Squeers in Nicholas Nickelby and is in the current British police show, New Tricks.

Question #2 - I'm a Brooklyn boy, plain and simple. Most people seemed to know that. When I was 13, we moved to Staten Island.

Question #3 - Most people guessed "The King of Thieves", but I played the part in a production of "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves". I played the parts of Quasimodo and An Echo in our school Sings. I suspect that the Quasimodo part was responsible for the back problems I had today, as I was bent over for the entire production. In my part as an Echo, the Echoes were portrayed as three brothers, two of which acted as wrestlers, who beat the hell out of the third echo as part of their schtick. Yes, I played the nerd echo who got beaten on. Throughout the production, my injuries increased with the use of crutches and by the end, I was in a wheelchair.

While we did a production of Grease in school, I didn't play Kenickie - I was stage crew...

Question #4 - I've had hernia surgery three times. The first was when I was about two. There is obviously something congenital there as both Wombatgirl and Puppyboy have had the same affliction when they were about that age.

The other two times happened in my early thirties, in the same year. Fun trivia fact - If you have a hernia on your right side, there is a 80% chance you will then have it on your left side. If you have a hernia on your left side, there is only a 20% chance you will then have it on your right side.

Question #5 - The movie was "What's up Doc?". When I was eight, I was in Miami, and my parents went to a wedding where there were no kids allowed. So they ordered me room service at the hotel and let me what whatever movies I wanted on the TV. I ended up watching "What's Up Doc?" four times before my parents came back to the room. It's still one of my favorite slapstick comedies.

Most people said Willie Wonka, which was our favorite movie to see when I was in college.

Question #6 - No one got this one. The movie I saw eight time when it first came out was "The Sting". I saw it with both my parents and with my Aunt. Plus, I saw it a large number of times by myself (it helped that in those days they didn't kick you out of the theater after each show). I enjoyed the story, the music (it sparked my interest in ragtime), the cardsmanship (Paul Newman's hands were actually those of gambling expert and magician John Scarne). A cool movie all around.

Question #7 - No one got this one either. Most people guessed Turkey, but I was there (in Istanbul, not Constantinople) with my mom (who worked for Pan Am at the time) as part of their "Turkey for Thanksgiving" promotion. Basically, we left on Wednesday and came back on Sunday. For $100, we had a guide, as well as a private van and driver. The cost also included airfare and hotel. The high point of the trip was going to Topkapi palace and seeing the famed dagger used in the caper film, Topkapi. I also enjoyed the Bazaar, but I wished I had been working a little longer so that I could have some more money to spend.

I was in Panama (post-Noriega, thankfully) for work. A pretty good time, although a bit harrowing for a time when the Cuban refugees there broke the blockades (I'll have to tell the story sometime).

I was in Frankfurt and Munich with my mom as well.

As for Scotland, I have yet to go there. Perhaps some day...

Question #8 - My first car was a Red 1978 Camaro (beloved of Police everywhere). Surprisingly, it was the only decent car I could find used on short notice. It did pretty well until the engine started to die.

Question #9 - Most people thought it was The Shadow. While, I enjoyed that show (specifically the Orson Welles version - most people who know me know how much I like Orson Welles), I found it to have a certain sameness after a while. The show I always like best was X-Minus-1 (and its precursor Dimension-X), a great science fiction anthology show. Suspense came a close second, for the excellent stories and the guest actors.

Question #10 - Most people got this right. The items I don't collect are Historical Novels - that's The Wife(tm)'s job.

To date, I have over 1000 Comedy Albums/Recordings. I need to catalog what I have since I've lost count. I also need to transfer my older and rarer recording to digital media.
I have a large number of Classic Mystery novels, including all of the works by Ellery Queen and John Dickson Carr/Carter Dickson.

Those who played ARC know that I am a fanatic about Time Travel and Alternate History books. The two games I wrote were the alternate timeline games. I also try to watch every movie involving those subjects as well.

Question #11 - My first LARP was Dragon, the Steven Brust game, run by larpwriting. I met a large number of people there who I am still in contact with to this day. A good number of them even read this journal.

Question #12 - I first met The Wife(tm) at Cafe Casablanca. I think we only talked in character once (she thought I might be her father, but my character was too old for this to be true), but we talked a lot in the Con Suite. Most people got this.

Question #13 - Most people thought Arthur Conan Doyle, but actually he's third. My number one writer is Ellery Queen, ever since the Jim Hutton TV series came out. I used to stay up all night reading his books.

Second is John Dickson Carr/Carter Dickson, master of the Locked Room mysteries. I would love to see a good Locked Room mystery put into a game, but it's not an easy task.

I have all the books written by both Ellery Queen and John Dickson Carr, including some rares.

I like Jeffery Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme novels, but they are inconsistant in quality.

Question #14 - Despite the numerous hernia surgeries, my most recent surgery was on my wrist for DeQuervain's tendonitis.

For the record, I still have all four of my Wisdom teeth.

Question #15 - This was subjective, but I've always said that my favorite role was that of Artemus Gordon in Sic Semper. I was busy the entire game (right up until the end of game) and I got to portray a large variety of different disguises and personalities.

Joshua Quinn from 1936 was a lot of fun (and I enjoyed creeping people out), but there was a lot of down time for the character as well.

Tom Servo is the character I would love to play again, just because I had a fun time playing off The Wife(tm)'s Crow T Robot at "Tales from the Floating Vagabond III". As Random221b said, we were basically playing ourselves in funny costumes.

I played Simon Templar in Cafe Casablanca (the secod running) and I had a great time, but it just wasn't my favorite.

I recently found a pretty cool link that I figured I'd share (especially given the number of my friends who enjoy soundtracks. It is a blog called the OST Hub (http://osthub.blogspot.com/) that links to a ton of blogs that have out of print and rare Soundtracks available for download. They generally go through rapidshare or megaupload, so the number of files you can download is somewhat limited (Rapidshare is once an hour). However, the soundtracks available have been worth it.

It's like a kid in a candy store...

Practically Perfect in Every Way...

Grabbed from Ninjaslug

The interesting thing is that I have taken the Myers-Briggs tests six times and each time I've been pretty much in the center with a slight variance of +/- 5 from the middle (and which direction the variance goes shifts from side to side). My thought has always been that it means that I can snap at any second.. :-)

Almost Perfect- INFP
46% Extraversion, 53% Intuition, 46% Thinking, 46% Judging

So, you want to make the world a better place? Too bad it's never gonna happen.

Of all the types, you have to be one of the hardest to find fault in. You have a selfless and caring nature. You're a good listener and someone who wants to avoid conflict. You genuinely desire to do good.

Of course, these all add up to an incredibly overpowered conscience which makes you feel guilty and responsible when anything goes wrong. Of course, it MUST be your fault EVERYTIME.

Though you're constantly on a mission to find the truth, you have no use for hard facts and logic, which is a source of great confusion for those of us with brains. Despite this, in a losing argument, you're not above spouting off inaccurate fact after fact in an effort to protect your precious values.

You're most probably a perfectionist, which in this case, is a bad thing. Any group work is destined to fail because of your incredibly high standards.

Disregard what I said before. You're just easy to find fault in as everyone else!

Luckily, you're generally very hard on yourself, meaning I don't need to waste my precious time insulting you. Instead, just find all your own faults and insult yourself.

*****************

If you want to learn more about your personality type in a slightly less negative way, check out this.

*****************

The other personality types are as follows...

Loner - Introverted Sensing Feeling Perceiving
Pushover - Introverted Sensing Feeling Judging
Criminal - Introverted Sensing Thinking Perceiving
Borefest - Introverted Sensing Thinking Judging
Freak - Introverted iNtuitive Feeling Judging
Loser - Introverted iNtuitive Thinking Perceiving
Crackpot - Introverted iNtuitive Thinking Judging
Clown - Extraverted Sensing Feeling Perceiving
Sap - Extraverted Sensing Feeling Judging
Commander - Extraverted Sensing Thinking Perceiving
Do Gooder - Extraverted Sensing Thinking Judging
Scumbag - Extraverted iNtuitive Feeling Perceiving
Busybody - Extraverted iNtuitive Feeling Judging
Prick - Extraverted iNtuitive Thinking Perceiving
Dictator - Extraverted iNtuitive Thinking Judging

X-Files - One of my favorite science-fiction/supernatural shows. I always liked the standalone episodes than the megaplot ones.

6. Xenomorph - Well, I like the movie "Alien" a lot. One of the better horror movies.

5. Xochimilco - A really nice place I went to as part of my trip to Mexico. The flowered boats were incredible. I also enjoyed climbing the pyramids in Mexico as well.

4. X-Minus-1 - My dad is a Old Time Radio buff, and got me interested in it as well. This was my favorite show. Lots of great Science-Fiction stories by well-known authors.

3. Xmas - Although not strickly my religion, my mom's side of the family is Christian.
Wow!!!

Work was dead, so I decided to take off early and see "Casino Royale". It was excellent!

For those that didn't know, the movie was designed to be a reboot of the James Bond franchise, basically starting when he first gets his "00". It harkened back to the old James Bond of "Dr. No" and "From Russia with Love". This was Bond as spy, not Bond as over the top action figure. There are no Invisible Cars and massive special effects in this movie. Gone are all the Q devices that have been a staple of the films for so long. For the most part, it's back to normal stunt work.

This is not to say that it's without action. An early scene is a chase that lasts about 20 minutes. The man he was chasing was played by Sébastien Foucan, co-inventor of Parkour/Free-Running (see Parkour.com for more info) and watching him reminded me of a young Jackie Chan, but with out the silly stuff). A wonder to behold.

It showed a more unsure (yet egotistical) Bond, who still is developing into the later superspy. There were a number of in-jokes relating to the Bond mythos peppered throughout the movie. The movie shows much of how Bond became the man he later to be.

In general, the movie was faithful to the plot of the original book, with some updates (Chermin de Fer was updated to Texas Hold-em).

I only had two problems with the movie. Some of the hand to hand action scenes were done with lots of fast jumpy edits, a style of editing I never really cared for. Also, some of the scenes between Bond and Vesper Lynd went on a little long and dragged the movie down a bit.

As for Daniel Craig, he did a great job portraying Bond as a more viseral Bond, a man who knows that his job is essentially a killer. And yet, he shows that he has emotions that makes him more of a human being.

In all, a great flick. I've been a Bond fan ever since I was very young so it was was good to see a more human Bond. I hope that more are made.
